Turning 65 in Lehi

The youngest place in Utah’s big-city set, with under 6% of residents past 65 and a population that has more than doubled since 2000. The people turning 65 here are senior engineers on tech plans, and the parents they are moving into the basement apartment.

The Wasatch Front above the Salt Lake Valley

Lehi’s principal employers read like a tech index: Adobe’s campus, Texas Instruments’ 300-millimeter fab (with a second fab being built), Ancestry’s headquarters, Entrata, Weave, Xactware, Young Living, Podium, DigiCert, and Mountain Point Medical Center. Every one is a large private employer, and most pair a high-deductible plan with a health savings account. For an employee turning 65, that combination is the whole story: delay Part A and Part B on current coverage and contributions can continue, but enroll in Part A, or claim Social Security, and Part A backdates six months into contributions you already made.

The second Lehi story is the in-law suite. Parents relocating from another state who are already on Medicare keep Parts A and B unchanged, but a Medicare Advantage plan is tied to its service area and must be replaced, and a Medigap policy priced in another state may be re-rated. Utah’s new birthday rule helps only with the same insurer.

If you ever had URS or PEHP benefits

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
