Turning 65 in Logan and Cache Valley
A university town: Logan itself is only 6.5% over 65, the surrounding valley 10%. Utah State University’s retiree coverage stops at 65, which makes Logan the cleanest example in the state of “your employer plan ends, here is the handoff.”

USU is Logan’s largest employer by a wide margin, and its rule is unusual in being simple: early-retiree medical continues only until the individual reaches 65, after which the university points retirees to group Medicare plans through a Medicare Retiree Specialist (385-489-1313). That is a firm date to plan around: Part B must be in place the month the university coverage ends, and the six-month Medigap window opens with it. While still employed at USU, the university plan is current employment coverage and Part B can wait.
The rest of the valley’s large employers are private: Conservice’s headquarters, Intermountain’s Logan Regional Hospital, Gossner Foods, Cytiva (HyClone), Thermo Fisher, and Schreiber Foods, plus Cache County School District and Logan City with its own utility. One practical note: there is no Social Security field office in Cache Valley. The nearest is Ogden, about fifty miles south, and almost everyone here enrolls online.
