Turning 65 in Ogden
Home to the state’s largest single federal civilian workforce, which makes Ogden’s Medicare question different from the rest of the Wasatch Front: not whether to delay Part B, but whether to take it at all alongside a federal plan.

The IRS campus employs between 7,000 and 10,000 people in Ogden, and 2025 brought a wave of buyouts and layoffs followed by rehiring. Many of those separations landed at or near 65. Federal employees and retirees keep FEHB for life, and Part B is optional for them: FEHB pays whether or not you enroll, but some FEHB plans waive deductibles and copays when Medicare is primary, which can make the $202.90 premium worth paying. That is a plan-by-plan calculation, and turning 65 is a one-time qualifying event to change FEHB plans.
Outside the federal campus, Ogden’s employers follow the normal large-group rules: McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional, America First Credit Union’s headquarters, Autoliv, Fresenius, and Weber State University. Weber and Ogden school districts and the county add the public-sector PEHP path. And Weber County is where many Hill Air Force Base retirees live, so TRICARE For Life, which requires Part B, is part of the picture here too.

TRICARE For Life is automatic with Parts A and B and does not work without Part B. Enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period.

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
