Turning 65 in Provo and Orem
The youngest cities in this set, and the one place in Utah where the usual advice reverses: BYU’s plan does not let you delay Part B. It requires enrollment in Parts A and B at 65.

Provo is 6.7% over 65 and Orem 10.4%, both below the state average, because Brigham Young University sets the demographic tone. It also sets an unusual Medicare rule. BYU and other Church-affiliated employers use DMBA, and DMBA’s retiree guidance is explicit: at 65 or when Medicare-eligible you must enroll in Parts A and B and in DMBA’s Deseret Alliance supplement, and the employer premium contribution stops at 65. Faculty and staff who assumed they could ride the university plan past 65 need to plan the enrollment window like everyone else.
The rest of the valley follows the normal rules. Utah Valley University in Orem employs more than 6,000; Intermountain’s Utah Valley Hospital is the county’s flagship; the Utah State Hospital campus employs hundreds of state workers; Alpine and Nebo school districts are among the largest public employers in Utah; Vivint is headquartered in Provo. For those employers, current coverage lets Part B wait, and the PEHP supplement is the public-sector retirement option.

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
