Turning 65 in Salt Lake City
Utah’s densest concentration of government, university, and hospital payroll, and the state’s only VA medical center. Most Salt Lake readers are still working at 65 on a large-group plan and deciding whether to delay Part B.

About 12.5% of Salt Lake City’s 208,000 residents are 65 or older, a touch above the Utah average and well below the national one: this is a working-age capital city. The University of Utah and U of U Health, the State of Utah, Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City Corporation, the school district, Delta’s hub, Zions, ARUP, and Intermountain’s system headquarters all employ thousands of people who reach 65 while still on the payroll. For them the first question is not which plan to buy but whether to enroll in Part B at all yet.
The second local question is the VA. The George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center serves more than 70,000 veterans across three states, and many assume VA care makes Medicare unnecessary. The VA’s own answer is to sign up anyway: VA coverage does not count as creditable for Part B, so the lifetime penalty applies to anyone who enrolls later.

University of Utah staff and retirees
The University Retiree Health Plan continues as a Medicare supplement secondary to Medicare once you are eligible. While still employed, the university plan is current employment coverage, so Part B can wait.

Unused sick leave under the older programs converts to PEHP Medicare Supplement coverage at 8 hours per month after 65. Employees hired after January 4, 2014 have no retiree benefit, so the enrollment windows matter more.

VA care is not employer coverage. Delay Part B and the 10%-a-year penalty accrues; most veterans enroll to have coverage outside the VA system.

Large-group coverage lets you delay Part B and keep an HSA, but a final high-earning year sets your surcharge tier two years later.

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
