Turning 65 in Sandy and Draper

Sandy is the oldest big suburb on the Wasatch Front, with nearly 16% of residents past 65; Draper is a younger corporate campus town. Both are full of people finishing careers at fintech, insurance, and medical-device employers with large-group plans.

The Wasatch Front above the Salt Lake Valley

Sandy’s subdivisions were built in the 1970s through 1990s and their owners stayed: 15.8% of the city’s 94,000 residents are 65 or older, against 10% in Draper and 11.9% statewide. The employers are large and private: Becton Dickinson’s infusion plant is Sandy’s biggest, followed by American Express, Mountain America Credit Union’s headquarters, NICE inContact, Morgan Stanley, and Intermountain’s Alta View Hospital. Draper adds Edwards Lifesciences, 1-800 Contacts, Swire Coca-Cola, eBay, HealthEquity, and Progressive Leasing.

That mix produces one dominant situation: a 65-year-old on a good employer plan, often with a health savings account, who does not need Part B yet and should not accidentally end HSA eligibility by taking Part A or claiming Social Security. The Canyons School District, headquartered in Sandy, is the public-sector counterpart, where the PEHP supplement is the retirement-day question.

If you ever had URS or PEHP benefits

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
