Turning 65 in St. George
Nearly 22% of Washington County is 65 or older, almost double the Utah rate. This is where the state’s retirement migration lands, so the common St. George question is not about an employer at all: it is what happens to the Medicare plan you brought with you.

St. George’s largest employers are St. George Regional Hospital (Intermountain), Washington County School District, Utah Tech University, the city itself, and SkyWest Airlines’ headquarters, and their employees follow the usual rules: current large-group or PEHP coverage lets Part B wait, with an 8-month window after the last day. But the county’s demographer describes Washington County as still the largest recipient of retirement-age migration in Utah, and most of those arrivals are already on Medicare.
For them the rules are these. Original Medicare travels unchanged. A Medicare Advantage plan is tied to its service area; a permanent move triggers a special enrollment period to pick a plan sold in Washington County, and the county’s plan menu differs from the Wasatch Front’s. A Medigap policy from another state keeps working with any provider that takes Medicare, but the insurer may re-rate it for the new address, and Utah’s attained-age pricing means premiums rise with age. Utah’s 2025 birthday rule lets you move to a comparable or lower plan with the same insurer, without underwriting, in the 60 days after each birthday.

Arriving on Medicare from another state
Report the move to Social Security and your plan. Advantage members get a special enrollment period; Medigap holders should ask about re-rating and the birthday rule.
Medigap vs. Advantage →St. George Regional, school district, and Utah Tech staff
Working past 65 on employer or PEHP coverage: delay Part B if you like, enroll in the first month after your last day.
Still working at 65 →Selling the old house the year you turn 63 or 64
A large gain in the lookback year becomes a surcharge at 65 or 66. Time the sale, or plan to appeal only if a qualifying event applies (a gain alone does not).
The income surcharge →SkyWest and airline retirees
Retiree coverage does not delay Part B. Enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period even if the retiree plan continues.

You and your spouse can buy the PEHP Medicare Supplement at 65 whether or not your former employer offers retiree coverage; it requires Parts A and B. Plan 100 is $154.17 a month at 65 for 2026 (age-rated), and PEHP’s retiree counselors are at 801-366-7499. Whether your specific district, city, or county subsidizes it is an HR question; ask before your last day.
